Feminine Burnout & The Physical Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Apr 01, 2022

It’s 2022 and unfortunately, women’s health is still failing to adequately address the concerns of the modern woman. To make matters worse, pandemic ended up causing more stress on the healthcare system as well as the high volumes of women experiencing feminine burnout.

When we use the term feminine burnout, we’re referring to the particular type of fatigue and burnout affecting type A, overachieving women who are constantly over-giving at work and at home leading them to be exhausted and resentful.

Issues We’re Facing

We’re now starting to see how the pandemic has affected women - extreme fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, general unhappiness. Of course, the past two years haven’t been easy for anyone, but the women who were already experiencing feminine burnout for a while, are now having major issues with no clear guidance or help from their doctors. Why?

For one thing, the healthcare system isn’t equipped to deal with feminine burnout. Oftentimes they will prescribe an antidepressant or birth control, or send you from specialist to specialist. It seems that now the wait times are so much longer. Assessments are taking 6 months to a year to schedule, and women are feeling neglected and like they have no place to go.

We’re seeing women visiting Naturopaths who are extremely burnt out, and who haven’t been able to take care of themselves because they’ve had to take care of everyone else. Throughout the pandemic we were told “we’re all in this together”, but that messaging has made women feel as though they should be okay because everyone else is dealing with this too. They’re coming in with both mental health and physical health problems and are feeling guilt and shame for feeling this way. They’re feeling completely alone.

Physical Symptoms To Be Aware Of

The stress response or sympathetic nerve response that our bodies are built to handle, aren’t designed to handle it for months or years at a time. Because of this, it’s having a large negative impact on our health.

Some physical symptoms that you may be experiencing due to feminine burnout and should have addressed are:

  • Fatigue (a special type of fatigue that gives you brain fog and exhausted all day but then can’t sleep at night)
  • Weight Gain (not necessarily the number, but general feel of your body - lack of energy, knowing something is off)
  • Uncontrollable Mood Swings
  • Period Problems (heavy flow, missing periods, having extra periods)
  • Hair Loss
  • Digestive Issues (unexplainable bloating, discomfort, diarrhea or constipation)
