#229 What to do When Success Feels Like Survival (This Can't Be Normal)

May 21, 2026

You hired. You delegated. You built the systems, took the solo retreats, did everything right. And five days after coming home, you were already asking when you would get to escape again.

That is not a productivity problem. That is what leadership consultant and author Chanie Wilschanski calls the invisible weight of leadership. The constant anticipating, tracking, absorbing, and managing everyone's emotional temperature before anyone has asked. We have normalized it so completely that we don't even pause. We are just one foot in front of the other, putting out fires, until the fires start putting us out.

You're Not Making the Sandwiches. But You're Still Making the Sandwiches.

Someone is responsible for making the sandwiches before the trip. The time is getting closer. They are not being made. In four seconds, your brain has already run the full scenario: we'll leave late, the kids will be hungry, there's nothing at the park, and I am going to have to deal with that tantrum. So you send a reminder. Just a heads up.

You have broken the system. You entered before it could show you whether it works without you. If people cannot move without your reminders, you are the shock absorber and emotional stabilizer of every relationship in your life. Maybe you are not physically spreading cream cheese on bread. But you are still making the sandwiches. And it is fucking exhausting. And it is ruining our health and our joy.

What It Actually Costs High-Achieving Women to Keep Carrying the Mental Load

First, we pay with time. Then invisible labor. Then our wallets. The cleaner, the gardener, except now we are managing them too. And the final cost is the one no system can fix: our aliveness. Our vitality. The sense of knowing who we are.

"I don't know who I am anymore. I am not alive. I'm not dead, but I am not alive." That is when women finally say, " This can't be normal. That is when they stop tolerating it.

What Actually Restores Over-Functioning Women

Not more discipline. Not another retreat. Rhythms of return are the pre-decided, mood-proof, identity-giving practices that restore you from the inside. Pre-decided means not negotiated under pressure. Mood-proof means you don't renegotiate when you're not feeling it. Identity-giving means it is not just a habit, it is a declaration: I choose me.

You do not need 90 of them. You need a handful that returns you to yourself. And you need the people around you to hold them with you, not negotiate them down.

Not over-functioning does not just protect us. It creates space for the people we love to build their capacity. The team member who steps into parts of herself that were never possible when you did it for her. The child who learns early that she is not available for one-sided relationships. The marriage that becomes more connected because there is actual room for two people in it.

When the matriarch heals, the whole system heals.
