#219 How Pelvic Pain, Constipation, and Painful Sex Are Connected with Kristen Parise

Mar 12, 2026

Pelvic health physiotherapy is something many women still do not even know exists. If you are having issues with peeing, pooping, pelvic pain, pressure in the pelvis, constipation, leaking urine, pain with sex, or difficulty reaching orgasm, there is help available.

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects far more women than most people realize, yet many women believe these symptoms are simply normal or something they have to tolerate. When dysfunction becomes your baseline, it is easy to assume that is just how your body works.

I’m joined by pelvic health physiotherapist Kristen Parise, owner of Blueberry Therapy Pelvic Health and Pediatrics. Kristin has been a physiotherapist for more than 26 years and has spent the last decade focused on pelvic health, helping women understand and treat pelvic floor dysfunction.

Most Women Will Experience Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Most women will experience some type of pelvic floor dysfunction during their lifetime. Around fifty percent of women who have had a baby will have some degree of pelvic organ prolapse. Many women also experience urinary or fecal incontinence at some point in their lives, and pain with intercourse becomes more common as women age.

Despite how common these issues are, many women are never told that pelvic health physiotherapy exists or that help is available.

Signs Your Pelvic Floor May Not Be Functioning Well

Pelvic floor dysfunction can show up in many different ways. Some of the most common signs include heaviness or pressure in the pelvis, groin pain, pubic pain, hip pain, or SI joint pain at the back of the pelvis.

Other signs include constipation, leaking urine, pain with sex, or feeling very little sensation during sex, and not being able to orgasm.

Many women believe these symptoms are normal simply because they have experienced them for years.

Constipation Is One of the Most Overlooked Issues

Constipation is one of the most overlooked signs of pelvic floor dysfunction. Many women say they are not constipated, but when asked how often they have a bowel movement, the answer might be every three days.

That might feel normal for them, but it is not optimal.

Over time, constipation places pressure on the pelvic floor and can contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic organ prolapse.

Stress and Trauma Show Up in the Pelvic Floor

Pelvic health is also deeply connected to the nervous system. People who carry a lot of stress and tension in their bodies often hold it in their pelvic floor as well.

People who carry tension in their shoulders and jaw often carry the same tension in their pelvic floor.

There is also a strong connection between trauma and pelvic pain. Many women who experience pelvic floor dysfunction have experienced some form of sexual trauma, and the body remembers.

Pelvic Health Is Connected to Pleasure

Pelvic health is not only about preventing problems. It is also about reconnecting with the body and understanding pleasure.

Blood flow and nerve stimulation play an important role in pelvic health. Research shows that even a few minutes of stimulation several times a week can improve blood flow to the pelvic floor and improve how the nerves in that area function.

Helping women have better poops and better sex is connected to the same system.

Understanding the pelvic floor is an important part of better health, better sex, and a body that feels like your own again.
